Back to School Drive:

Our Back-to-School Drive initiative started in 2020 and came to fruition in 2022 due to the pandemic.  This initiative is important as it targets the schools in the communities in which we operate, where students who may not have the necessities to start the new academic year are given school bags and stationery.

The company partners with employees to make this initiative a success by providing a platform for volunteerism and a cause that employees value.

In 2022, we were able to positively impact the lives of 50 students in five primary schools in the Mayo and Claxton Bay communities.

This year (2023), our efforts yielded greater results as we were able to positively impact the lives of 150 students! These 150 students include the five primary schools in our communities as well as schools outside of our immediate communities, NGOs, The Rotaract Club of Piarco, U.W.I. just to mention a few.

The smiles on the faces of the recipients are such a rewarding feeling for all of us at Cemex | TCL, our hope is to continue to increase our reach and impact to more of Trinidad and Tobago.

Build Your Future Award

In our ongoing duty to build communities and lives, the Build Your Future Award program was developed and is aimed at rewarding 25 students from our operating communities.  To qualify for this award students must perform satisfactorily for both S.E.A. results and one prior end of term report as well as be an active member in their community group or involved in extra-curricular activities at School or any social group.  They must also reside in proximity to the TCL Plant – Claxton Bay or May and qualify for financial assistance.

Our Social Impact team works closely with the principals of each school to ensure that the program is administered with integrity; to date, 120 students have benefitted from this program with 25 awards being presented in 2024.

It is our goal that the Build Your Future Award continue to provide support to countless students in the future as we continue to partner to build more resilient communities.

Vulnerable Road User’s (VRU) Program

Our Road Safety education campaign “Look Out, Before You Step Out” targets the primary schools in our operating communities.

Our Safety Team visit the schools with a mixer truck and educates the students on the blind spots, when it is safe to cross the road, ensure that the truck drive sees you before you step out.

Students are very excited as they not only learn about road safety but also get the opportunity to interact with the mixer truck first-hand; the highlight for most is the blowing of the horn!

At Cemex/TCL we continue to ensure that Safety is just our number one priority but everyone’s.

Plant Tours

At Cemex/TCL we are always happy to be part of the development of the youths of Trinidad and Tobago, especially those preparing for CSEC exams whose has interest in the cement industry.

As the only manufacturer of cement in Trinidad and Tobago, we are always happy to support our CSEC students who interest lies in the industry as they visit our facilities at Mayo and Claxton Bay to get a firsthand look at the cement making process.

These tours are facilitated by our brilliant engineers who are always excited to engage the enthusiastic young minds as they explain the entire process, talk about the raw materials used, our export activities and field a lot of questions as information is solicitated for their School Based Assessment Projects.

Coastal Clean-Up

In commemoration of World Environment Day and World Oceans Day in June, Cemex TCL took to the coastal community of Mayaro to create a positive social impact in the area of Sustainability. Through our Cemex Volunteering initiative, over 100 of our employees and their family members participated in a coastal clean-up exercise at the popular Mayaro Beach, that saw over 800 pounds of waste removed, a significant portion of which was sent for recycling and upcycling.

This exercise is also in alignment with our Future in Action programme, which focuses on achieving sustainable excellence through climate action, circularity, and natural resource management with the primary objective of becoming a net-zero CO₂ company. This particular project would have helped to alleviate flooding, beautify the area, and protect marine life in the Mayaro community, where fishing and tourism are also major economic drivers. Additionally, we have contributed to waste management and circularity through the removal and recycling/upcycling of harmful waste from the beach.

Cemex TCL remains proud of this achievement, and the collaborative spirit shown in its execution. We recognize and appreciate our partners for their essential support in ensuring the success of this project: The Office of the Member of Parliament for Mayaro, International Coastal Clean Up – Trinidad & Tobago, Flying Tree Environmental, and Buzz Concepts Ltd.

They are focused primarily on skill development and training, sport, community service, and productive socialization, aimed at generating opportunities for advancement of young people, and creating multi-faceted members of society, and providing economic opportunities for the future generations.

Cemex TCL is proud to lend its support to the Mayo Youth Academy and its operations, as we recognize the social value this organization brings to the Mayo community, which is also home to our limestone quarry. Over the years, the company would have contributed to the upgrade of facilities used by the academy, as well as provided sporting gear and uniforms, among other paraphernalia to members in need. We remain committed to continued partnership with the Mayo Youth Academy, and building a better, stronger community.

Mayo Community Agricultural Project

The goals of MCAP is to facilitate a minimum of forty (40) small scale farming operations, to establish a model farm to demonstrate and transfer sustainable agricultural practices and agricultural conservation principles to the farming community of Mayo to promote agriculture as a viable business for economic growth.

Refurbishment of the Mayo Basketball Court and Community Park

Community infrastructure plays a critical role in building strong communities as it provides platforms where members of the community can engage and be engaged positively.  More importantly, community infrastructure has the potential to deter youths away from a life of negative activities.

Cemex’s Volunteering program allowed us to partner with the community of Mayo to refurbish their Basketball Court and Gordon Square Community Park.  Employees from both our Mayo and Claxton Bay facilities along with members of the community of all ages came out in their numbers to volunteer their time and skills.

The Mayo Community now enjoys their basketball court and Gordon Square community park!
